Life Maintenance

Defined succinctly, minimalism, as a lifestyle, is the art of letting go. But it’s worth noting that letting go is not the destination. In fact, it is not even the road that leads to the destination. Letting go is just the regularly scheduled road maintenance required to keep traffic flowing efficiently.

When an actual road is filled with unplowed snow, fallen tree branches, or gaping potholes, it is difficult to traverse. Eventually, with enough obstructions, it becomes impossible.

Life is the same: we’ve cluttered life’s roads with accoutrements, trading purpose for ephemera, and we’ve lost sight of the destination—a meaningful life.

Minimalism simply clears the road—not of everything, but of that which is blocking the way. By letting go, we remove the debris, and the destination is easier to find. The scenery is much nicer, too.
